The next high-level meeting of the presidencies of the COP “Troika” was held within the framework of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
The American bureau “Report” reports that the event was attended by ministers and high-level representatives of several countries, as well as officials from international organizations.
Speaking at the meeting, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mukhtar Babayev, designated President of COP29, underlined the importance of joint efforts of the COP “Troika” presidencies in the fight against global climate change within the framework of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
M. Babayev drew attention to cooperation with the “troika” countries of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC): the United Arab Emirates (COP28) and Brazil (COP30).
The minister noted that the COP29 summit in Baku will be a critical moment for the countries of the world.
“Scientific results show that the world is currently not moving fast enough to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. We need to increase the Nationally Determined Contributions targets to achieve the 1.5°C target,” said M. Babayev .
The minister emphasized that a broad consensus must be created at COP29 to agree new financial targets and increase support for developing countries in the fight against climate change:
“In the coming days and months we will need sincere cooperation between all countries in this regard.”
The speeches highlighted that the Baku-Belem Climate Partnership Memorandum adopted between Azerbaijan and Brazil provides an important framework for strengthening cooperation between the countries in the field of sustainable development and the fight against climate change.
In the speeches there were extensive discussions about the objectives of determined contributions at the next national level.
