The candidacy of Nova Esquerra Nacional presented 1,500 people this Friday to present themselves at the ERC congress which will decide the direction of the party. This figure represents more than a thousand fewer supporters than the list led by his main rival and candidate for party leadership, Oriol Junqueras. This Friday, the support for the third candidate in the running, Foc Nou, will also be known.
As Nova Esquerra’s candidacy reports, the list considers this figure “a success” even though the mentions were collected only a month and a half after its presentation. “The support allows us to present ourselves, but our objective is to win,” declared the candidate for the presidency of the party, Xavier Godàs, and the candidate for the post of secretary general, Alba Camps.
Militància Decidim, the candidacy under which Oriol Junqueras is running again at the head of the ERC, has collected 2,577 supporters, a figure which is equivalent to almost a third of the census of activists, which amounts to more than 8,200.
ERC must now validate the registered signatures, given that each activist can only endorse one of the pre-applications and there may be cases of duplication, among other incidents.
The ERC congress will take place on November 30 and three candidates will compete, who will, as expected, obtain the necessary approvals (412.5% of the total number of activists). These are the Militància Decidim, led by Junqueras; Nova Esquerra Nacional, which brings together those close to Marta Rovira opposed to their former leader; and Foc Nou, the third candidate, more detached from the old leadership of the ERC and who aspires to gain a foothold in the struggle thanks to his open refusal to accept agreements with the PSC.
In the event that none of the three obtains more than 50% of the votes on November 30, the lists will be able to agree for the second round, which will take place on December 14. Moves in this direction have already started: Godàs has been in favor of reaching agreements with Foc Nou, led by Helena Solà, to prevent Junqueras from regaining control of the ERC.
