Liputan6.com, Rome – An amazing incident occurred in the Uffisi Gallery, Florence, when a tourist destroyed a picture of the 18th century, trying to take a selfie.

The picture is a portrait of Ferdinando de Medici, the great Prince Tuscany by the famous artist Anton Domenico Gabbiani.

According to the gallery, the visitor retreated, trying to “make a meme” in front of the picture, causing physical damage, which is now being repaired by the preservation team.

The director of the Uffisi Gallery, Simon Verde, expressed concern about visitors’ trends that were more focused on the content of social networks than on the respect of work.

“The problem of visitors who come to the museum is just to make memes or selfies more unbridled,” he said, as he quoted Bi -bi -xWednesday (25.06.2025).

He also emphasized that the museum will establish more stringent behavioral restrictions.

“We will impose very clear rules to prevent behavior that does not correspond to the value of cultural institutions and respect for the heritage of art,” Verde added.

The picture is part of a special exhibition called Florence and Europe: the art of the eighteenth century, in which about 150 works of art are involved. As a result of this incident, the temporary exhibition was closed until July 2 to restore and maintain paintings and is planned to be opened until November 28 as the initial plan.

The police determined the involved visitors and informed the local legal body about this.

This incident was not the first when this happened. Earlier this year, a man from Palazzo Maffei, Verona, also damaged a chair decorated with precious stones, trying to take a picture.

The director of the Museum of Vanessa Carlon said: “Sometimes we lose our opinion only for photography without thinking about the consequences.”
