This Saturday, the Plaza del Grano was dressed in tradition and folklore to host for the tenth year the celebration of the pilgrimage of La Melonera, a traditional gathering that highlights the customs and traditions of the city, organized by the cultural association García I and. which has the collaboration of the City Council of León.
La Melonera remembers the meeting of the Leonese in a meadow at the entrance to León documented in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where melons and watermelons were sold. For ten years, the Plaza del Grano has been the scene of this pilgrimage with demonstrations of ancient crafts, traditional clothing and, above all, melons and watermelons.
The pilgrimage of La Melonera began at 11:00 a.m. with a parade through the Mercado neighborhood and traditional dances in the Plaza del Grano, as well as the distribution of the parva and, at 11:45 a.m., the proclamation took place by the Councilor of Festivities, Camino Orejas, which gave way to the distribution of portions of melons and watermelons and the representation of the marriage of widowers.
In the afternoon, at 4:30 p.m., the celebrations continue with a cheese workshop and traditional dances, a distribution of melon and watermelon portions and performances of the Leonese wedding, the filandón and the covada. The pilgrimage will end with the tour and counter-tour. In addition, throughout the day, in the Plaza del Grano, there will be blacksmithing, paprika, cheese and plant workshops, artisanal textile workshops, vegetable fiber workshops and crafts and tasks.
