“The police are not perfect”

The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, admitted that freed 8,000 innocent people who were detained under the emergency regime introduced two and a half years ago to combat the country’s gangs.

“Obviously operations are not perfect and, without any intention of harming an innocent person, some innocent people are obviously captured in the same way as it happens in France, Germany, Japan and every country in the world. We are already publishing them. We have already released 8,000 people and we will release 100% of the innocent people,” he said on Tuesday.

The Salvadoran leader argued that “No font in the world is perfect” and that people are captured and released by the justice system, while it attempts to discredit the complaints of human rights organizations that have documented arbitrary arrests, abuses and deaths in prisons.

Up to 30,000 innocent people in prison

Bukele said in response to a journalist who echoed a report on 30,000 innocent people arrested that these figures were invented by opposition organizations and urged these organizations to present a dossier containing evidence demonstrating such a situation.

Recently, relatives of innocent people released from prison have questioned the conditions in which they were released, because in most cases the processes are not completed.

They also reported that there is no reparation from the state in these cases, despite the fact that it is provided for in the Constitution.
