Three women and one of their babiesaged just over a year, were injured on Sunday afternoon while they knocked down by a National Police car in the center of Madrid. One of the women was seriously injured, while the baby was admitted to hospital with a guarded prognosis. The baby’s mother and a third woman are in a less serious and light condition, respectively.
The accident occurred around 4:10 p.m., at the intersection of Narváez and Alcalá streets, the Madrid police and emergency services informed. The police patrol was heading to the area around the accident site in response to a request for support from other police officers who were trying to arrest a man who had assaulted another person and that he continued with a violent attitude.
According to police sources, the patrol was circulating with the sound and light signals onand so the rest of the vehicles moved out of their way. However, one of the drivers, apparently unintentionally, crossed paths with the patrol and the policeman behind the wheel had to to change direction suddenly.
The police car ended up climbing onto the sidewalk and hitting three people, two women and the baby of one of them. The Municipal Police has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances in which the accident occurred.
For their part, the Samur-Protection Civile ambulance workers treated the three injured. The most serious, with one foot in a catastrophic statewas a 47-year-old woman who was admitted to the hospital in La Paz. The other woman, aged 34, suffered a fractured femur and multiple bruises and was evacuated to the 12 de Octubre hospital with a less serious prognosis, according to the Madrid Emergency Department.
Her baby, just over a year old, had facial trauma and head traumawas admitted to Niño Jesús with a guarded prognosis while the extent of the blow to the head is known. The third woman, injured in the leg, was transferred to Gregorio Marañón in minor condition. In addition, health workers treated three other people – including the baby’s grandmother – for anxiety attacks and two of them were transferred to the hospital.
