The word of the year in Russia in 2024 was the concept of “vibe”, a state of mind or atmosphere that emanates from a person, object, place or situation. This was reported by the press service of the Russian-language portal Gramota.ru.
The vibe can be, for example, good, dark, intense, charged, student, southern, fresh.
Linguists note that “vibe” appeared in the Russian language several years ago, but it was in 2024 that it showed a steady increase in its mention and became known beyond youth groups.
The words “skuf” and “arrival” also participated in the expert vote. According to the results of a soft vote, in which more than 400 Russian philologists participated, “arrival” scored 124 points, 229 – “skuf”»256 – “vibration”.
Like last year, the “word of the year” will be added to the Certificate’s meta-dictionary, as a result of the recognition of its linguistic meaning by native speakers and specialists.
Let us remember that according to the Institute for the Development of the Russian Language, the word of 2024 was “Pushkin”. The choice of the word of the year was carried out in three stages. First, the results of a popular vote, in which more than 2,000 people participated, helped create a list of the most popular words. Automatic analysis then revealed the frequency of use of these words in media, search engines, and corpus data. In the final, the institute’s expert committee determined the winner using 14 words. The surname of the Russian poet came first. The top five words of the year also included “family,” “artificial intelligence,” “choice,” and “quadbroker.”
