Kidnapped by Phalangist soldiers August 1936, these girls, aged 16 to 22were victims of Phalangist barbarism. The murderers themselves strutted around town recounting their crimes, showing off their underwear hanging from their guns. Since then, no news has been heard of their bodies.
88 years laterthese nine women could have appeared in a hidden grave 30 km from where they were kidnapped. These are the 30 kilometers that separate Fuentes de Andalucía, in Seville, from the ancient cemetery of Cañada Rosal. Three years of exhumation which could put an end to the families’ horror.
The researchers are convinced that these are his remainsbased on data such as the clothes they wore or the food they found there: “Everything indicates that it is them,” says Rodrigo Rodríguez, mayor of Cañada Rosal. In the absence of anthropological and genetic study in Fuentes de Andalucía, the region celebrates the discovery, although without enthusiasm: “We are on the verge of being able to give them a decent burial, but there will be no justice” , declares enthusiastically Emilio Caballero, great-nephew of one of them.
