The PP goes against everything Therese Ribera. The “populars” of Alberto Núñez Feijóo, with the connivance of his colleagues in the European People’s Party (EPP), are determined to launch a total war against the still third vice-president of the government to cover up the negligent management of the government. DANAfrom one of their own, Carlos Mazoneven if it means leave the formation of the future European Commission on hold in a turbulent international context.
Spanish conservatives have been trying for days divert attention to central government and, in particular, towards Ribera, at the head of the Ecological Transition, for a disaster which left more than 200 dead in Valencia and whose political management increasingly monopolizes the Valencian president of the PP. A strategy which has led them to now transfer this file to Brussels boycott the meeting of the socialist as vice-president of the next community executive.
For the moment, the PP of Feijóo has already achieved this week Ribera’s muddy hearing before the European Parliament and delay the vote on his suitability for the post of commissioner, and with him also that of the five other candidates appointed by the President of the Commission, Ursula Von der Leyento be vice-presidents. A maneuver which could ruin the whole pact to form the next Commission, derailing a vast and complex agreement between different countries and political families.
The future Commission, in the air because of the maneuvers of the PP
He European People’s Party (PPE), for its part, has indicated in recent hours that it would be ready to give the green light to the Spanish candidate If Ribera agrees to resign if indicted for the leadership of DANA and the social democrats and liberals support the ultra candidate of the Italian Giorgia Meloni, Raffaele Fitto, candidate to occupy another of the vice-presidencies, and the Hungarian far right Olivér Várhelyi as commissioner for Health.
A political mess that also puts the president in a complicated position Von der Leyenwhich belongs precisely to the family of “popular” Europeans. It was she who appointed Ribera vice-president and this Wednesday he maintained his confidence in the candidateas expressed by the Commission spokesperson, who indicated that the head of the European Executive “gave her confidence to all the candidates” and that “nothing has changed”. The spokesperson also underlined von der Leyen’s wish that the new college of commissioners start working as quickly as possible.
Its constitution is, however, threatened by the PP’s games in Brussels. In this context, those around Ribera highlight a Fight between Von der Leyen and EPP leader Manfred Weberand they accuse Feijóo of use it to distract media attention from Mazón’s role in DANA. In exchange, according to sources from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Feijóo would have committed to supporting Weber so that he renews the presidency of the EPP at the party congress which will be held in a few months.
A movement for the interests of Feijóo and Weber, they criticize, to which the European Commission is blockedwhich leads to enormous instability in the international context. They thus criticize them for leaving the future Commission in suspense and The European Union weakened in a particularly delicate geopolitical momentwith Donald Trump about to return to the White House and the EU “disappeared because of Feijóo’s relationship with Weber.”
Díaz speaks of the “major” irresponsibility of the PP
From the Spanish government, the second vice-president and leader of the junior coalition partner, Yolanda Diazdenounced the “major” irresponsibility of the PP by trying to prevent Ribera’s nomination for reasons of “partisan interests”. In statements to the media this Thursday, reported by Europa Press, Díaz criticized the fact that the PP believes that delaying the appointment of Ribera goes against the Executive, but “this is not true”, because it harms the Spanish and goes “against the Europeans”.
“They are blocking and delaying the configuration, the definition of the current European Commission simply because partisan interests. The president herself [Von der Leyen] shows his dissatisfaction with the position adopted by the PP. “It is unheard of for a party to block community institutions when there is a prior agreement, simply for partisan interests,” criticized Díaz, who said it was necessary for the Commission to get to work as hard as possible. as soon as possible and that Ribera is in part, especially when in Spain, thanks to DANA, it has been noted that “the climate emergency exists and kills”
He thus asked the PP “to act for once like the Spaniards in Europe” and to “defend the interests of the Spanish people”: “I ask Feijóo to defend the institutions of his country and practice Spanish, in this case in European institutions,” he added.
