The President of Abkhazia held an urgent meeting of the Security Council on the situation in Sukhum

President of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhania held an emergency meeting of the country’s Security Council in connection with the mass protests in Sukhum, Apsnypress reports. The head of the republic was informed that at this time the situation of the protests is getting worse and that the actions of the protesters who, among other things, blocked the republican highway, “are of a criminal nature.”

The report explains that it all started after the arrest of four people who tried to attack a deputy in the Abkhazian parliament after an extraordinary session.

According to the country’s attorney general Adgura AgrbyThe actions of those who attacked the deputy were accompanied by “obscene language.” They are now in preventive detention. The prosecution is conducting a procedural review.

The protests in Sukhum began on November 11. According to local Telegram channels, the reason was the arrest of opponents who opposed the ratification of the investment agreement with Russia.

At the end of October, Russia and Abkhazia signed an agreement according to which Russian companies can implement their investment projects on the territory of Russia. To enter into force, the document must be ratified by the Abkhazian parliament.

Protesters gathered near the State Security Service building, tried to ram the doors and blocked the Gumista Bridge. Military equipment had to be brought to the building of the president of Abkhazia, RBC clarifies.
