Rafig Abdullayev, who made great contributions to the development of Azerbaijan’s oil industry, worked in this field for more than 50 years and played a unique role in the signing of the “Contract of the Century”, returned 30 years ago and shared the memories of those days with Baku TV.
“The most beautiful moments of my life were September 20, 1994. Before the “Contract of the Century” was signed, of course, the preparation process was very intense. There was a lot of pressure on the country’s leaders to prevent the agreement from being reached,” said R. Abdullayev.
Rafiq Abdullayev says that it was a very long and complicated road before the signing of the “Contract of the Century”: “The negotiations were very intense. They made Russia’s permission a condition. Then, the President Heydar Aliyev He took that step and said that Azerbaijan is an independent state, I can give any field to any foreign company.”
Rafig Abdullayev, a living witness and participant of this historic process, also stressed the importance of the “Contract of the Century” for Azerbaijan: “The signing process was conducted at a very high level. 500 people were invited to the signing ceremony, and 300 people attended the dinner. The “Contract of the Century” gave us the opportunity to bring major states closer to Azerbaijan politically and to increase our economic power.”
