A week after Juanma Moreno and Carlos Mazón consolidated the alliance of two of the main barons of the PP in terms of regional financing, it was the turn of the PSOE. The Secretary General of the PSOE-A, Juan Espadas, and the Minister and Secretary General of the PSPV-PSOE, Diana Morant, held a meeting toobtain a common position on regional financing.
Andalusia and the Valencian Community are two of the autonomy affected by the current regional financing system with Castilla La Mancha and Murcia. And also those most affected in the event of a change that could result in a loss of resources. However, their economic and political realities are different: Valencia has a serious debt problem that hampers its capacity and its 2025 budget is not guaranteed. Andalusia can maintain itself with its current level of debt and its accounts for next year are guaranteed.
Hence the strategic importance for both parties to agree and have a common position. During their meeting, Juan Espadas and Diana Morant jointly demanded a “a new regional funding model that is fair to both communities and protects fundamental public services, such as health, education and dependency“. To this end, they demanded that the central axis of distribution be the population of each territory, following the framework ratified by the Andalusian Parliament in 20178.
More precisely, the two autonomous socialist leaders pleaded for a model focused on equality, solitude and social justice and they defended their rejection of the tax reduction policies of the autonomy. “It is inconsistent to tax dump other communities and at the same time ask for more funding from the state.”
The meeting between the two leaders also coincides with the meeting held in Moncloa by the President of Government, Pedro Sánchez, with the President of the Valencian Community, Carlos Mazónas part of the series of meetings between the head of the Central Executive and regional governments.
