The passage of the DANA through Mallorca caused heavy flooding in Portocristo (Manacor), where the overflow of the Na Llebrona torrent swept away boats, terraces and vehicles, left half submerged by the rising waters. The 112 emergency service warned that on Monday morning the torrent could overflow again.
Until 2:00 p.m., the emergency service dealt with a total of 141 incidents in Mallorca, most of them due to flooding of basements (49) and public roads (39). Of this total, 46 were recorded in Manacor and 25 in Campos, the municipalities most affected by DANA. The teams also provided services in Palma, Calvià, Montuïri, Marratxí, Ses Salines, Pollença and Felanitx, Vilafranca, Algaida, Llucmajor, Binissalem, Sant Llorenç, Sóller, Porreres and Sencelles, according to information broadcast by 112.
In Portocristo, the Manacor Local Police, the municipal brigade and municipal service company personnel continue to work on incidents caused by the rains. The actions focus on the overflows of the Riuet, on the beach of s’Estany d’en Mas and on landslides on rural roads, beaches and highways. In the case of the beach, the storm brought down 30 umbrellas, dismantled the walkway and toppled the emergency tower. There were no injuries but, precisely in this area, two people who were inside a car were rescued.
Likewise, around twenty vehicles were affected by the overflowing of the Portocristo torrent and were swept away by the waters. Troops continue to work to restore normalcy in these two areas, as well as on several roads where there have been landslides. As for roads, the road from Sa Vall to Manacor remains closed and the underground parking lot in Plaza de Sant Jaume, temporarily closed due to the entry of water, has been reopened.
For their part, the Majorca firefighters carried out five rescues of people trapped due to rising water on the roads and creeks. The incidents took place mainly in the Levante and Migjorn areas of Mallorca, including the rescue of a vehicle stuck on the road between Campos and Colònia de Sant Jordi. The troops also acted due to accumulations at the Rafa Nadal Academy and in the torrent in the area of the Manacor slaughterhouse.
The Civil Guard, for its part, helped several drivers who were stuck in their vehicles when they were surprised by the storm and rising waters. As Benemérita reports in a press release, Citizen Security patrols, as well as the Traffic Detachment and the Underwater Activities Group (GEAS), participated in the devices deployed due to the storm that hit Majorca.
Aemet, for its part, warned that this Monday will begin the “most unfavorable” part of the episode and it is likely that DANA will move towards the southwest until approaching the Gulf of Cádiz, while ‘at the same time it will move towards the southwest. produce cyclogenesis at low levels leading to a decrease in area around the southern coast of the peninsula between the afternoon and night. In this way, DANA will “most likely” evolve into a cold storm.
As a result, an easterly wind will establish itself in the Mediterranean which will intensify on Tuesday, favoring the arrival of a large quantity of humidity to the east of the peninsula. Very heavy showers are expected without excluding that they could locally reach torrential intensity, in addition to being persistent and accompanied by very strong gusts of wind.
Regarding the location of the heaviest rains, it is very likely that on Monday the maximum levels will be reached in Tarragona and Castellón, as well as in the Strait and, from the afternoon, also in the south- east of the peninsula.
