“The reception services can’t take it anymore”

New call for help from the Consell of Mallorca to the government of Pedro Sánchez before the influx of unaccompanied migrant minors (menas) who arrive en masse on the island. The island institution governed by the PP-Vox coalition has warned that its resources for the reception of these illegal immigrants “they can’t take it anymore“, so they asked to set up tents in the old Son Tous barracks in Palma.

This is how the island’s Minister of Social Protection expressed himself on Monday, Guillermo Sanchezwho demanded greater involvement from the government of the socialist Pedro Sánchez in the care of these minors on this island. And as the president of IMAS also explained, the system of reception of minors in Mallorca is “excessively stressed“.

The advisor thus urged the government delegate to the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodriguezto join these demands of the Consell to the Executive of Sánchez to “alleviate the critical situation that the Consell is experiencing” and “get involved” in terms of financing and provision of spaces.

Barracks Sound All

As Guillermo Sánchez explains, the measure to rehabilitate the old Son Tous barracks in Palma would serve as a measure “temporary”since currently the National Police is already taking them to this place to do the screening to determine age and, from their point of view, it is an “ideal” place to hold this first reception.

The Son Tous barracks are closed The Ministry of Defense is periodically authorized by the National Police during times of migration crisis and on days when there is an avalanche of boats on the coasts of the Balearic Islands to register immigrants who arrive by boat. So far, it does not accept minors, but rather illegal immigrants. adults, who usually do not stay more than a day in these Palma establishments until they are free.

However, the councilor acknowledged that the Consell “hurts” having to host the reception under a tent but specified that it is “necessary” to “I don’t see the images of the Canary Islands” and recalled that in three days last week, a total of about 600 people arrived.

Regarding the request for funding, the island’s mayor demanded that the Government have “the greatest possible economic involvement”, since the Consell allocates more than 7,000 euros per month to accommodate each minor.

Sánchez clarified that currently the Consell protects 310 unaccompanied foreign minors now 571 in the system totalwhich implies an overcrowding of 40 percent in the 12 centers currently available to the island institution.

More money to welcome minors in Mallorca

It is worth recalling that the Consell de Mallorca was forced, last July, to award An additional 8.8 million for reception and care services for unaccompanied minors (menas) before the avalanche of boats arriving at the island. In addition, Guillermo Sánchez had to make a call to social entities, the Bishopric of Mallorca and the Spanish Government, through the Government Delegation, to establish formulas for collaboration “to alleviate the crisis we are experiencing in the management of unaccompanied foreign minors.”

And Mallorca “has consolidated itself as a migratory route, which has gone from being a transit zone to being a final destination,” they explain from the institution governed by Llorenc Galmes. This is why the island institution is demanding more money, personnel and premises from the Central Government and the Bishopric to face this situation that they call a “limit”.
