In 2023, the average income of an Uber Eats delivery driver is 4.50 euros, for an average service of about twelve minutes. Specifically, and taking into account the wait between each race, a freelancer who systematically works for the platform accepting all races would reach 10.10 euros. Subtracting the contributions linked to this regime – around 20% –, the average net income of a delivery driver would be well below the minimum net hourly wage (9.23 euros).
These data arise from an analysis published on Wednesday, October 2, by the Center of Experts in Digital Regulation of the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Social Relations Authority of Employment Platforms (ARPE). It establishes that between 2021 and 2023, a period of high inflation, the income of VTC drivers has stagnated, while those of home delivery food deliverers have decreased.
In detail, the data is what any platform is obliged to communicate each year to the authorities. On the VTC side, we know, for example, that service revenue varies between 11 and 19 euros for the main platforms such as Bolt, Uber or Heetch, but reaches 40 euros in LeCab and Marcel, where the trips are longer and exclusive.
Deterioration of working conditions.
As for delivery, races pay better on Deliveroo (5.50 euros) or Stuart (6 euros) than on Uber Eats (4.50 euros), but each platform has its specificities. These figures allow us to obtain a theoretical average hourly income, but it is not usable because the majority of freelancers work for several platforms and because it does not include waiting between various services.
The ARPE study precisely offers an estimate of the average hourly income with waiting time. At Uber and Bolt, the two leaders, the amount is slightly less than 40 euros per hour in 2023. At Heetch, it is barely 25 euros. This is a high estimate, because it assumes that a self-employed worker would accept all the services offered. You must also add contributions and charges (vehicle maintenance, etc.). As for couriers, where there are certainly fewer fees, we drop on Deliveroo to 16.80 euros (compared to 17.3 in 2021), and therefore to 10.10 euros (compared to 11.9) on Uber Eats.
For several years, the various organizations of self-employed drivers and delivery people have insisted on the deterioration of working conditions in their sectors, where the proportion of undocumented workers is constantly increasing, to replace those who resign to find something better somewhere else.
