the return to Orihuela of his medieval book plundered by Catalonia

Sarcasm (bitter irony) currently rarely has a place in a politics made of easy resources and little speech. This is, however, not the case for one of 56 claims he made on Friday the President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón (PP), to the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez (PSOE), during the meeting they both had in Moncloa.

It is the return of Book of Distributions, one of the oldest texts in the city of Alicante, Orihuela which was acquired irregularly by the Provincial Deputation of Barcelona and which was bequeathed to the Library of the Institute of Catalan Studies of Barcelona, today the Library of Catalonia. A text commissioned in the 13th century by Infant Alfonso of Castile, who would later be known as Alfonso X “The Wise” and therefore foreign to a so-called “Catalan” culture.

This requirement, which the autonomous government of Salvador Illa, also a socialist, could easily meet at the request of the central government, is politically ironic in a political context where the demand for a “Catalan quota” hinders, according to the Valencian Council, the financing possibilities of the Community.

In the request, Mazón expresses to the government that the “Freedom of the Repartitions of the lands between vehins of the Noble and Legal and Insignia City of Oriola is he only testimony of the distribution of the lands of Orihuela and the Alicante region of Vega Baja del Segura achieved after the Christian reconquest in 1243″.

For its part, the ministerial response has always been that the devotion is denied, alleging that the said document was transferred to the Library by a supposed verbal agreement. “Of which there is no registration or documentation,” replies the Generalitat Valenciana.

illicit sale

However, from Orihuela the version is very different. In 2021, the town hall of Oriolano threatened to take legal action, giving a period of three months for the Catalan government to return the document which they cataloged as “one of theYes most important documentary sources for the study and knowledge of Orihuela from the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century.

Known as “constitutional act” of the Christian Orihuela, For the Oriolanos, it is a looting carried out between the years 1907 and 1908, when the manuscript was stolen from the municipal archives of Orihuela, his whereabouts were not known until between 1920 and 1933. At that time, “he was acquired, undoubtedly knowing its illicit origin, by the Provincial Deputation of Barcelona, which deposited it in the Library of the Institute of Catalan Studies of Barcelona, today the Library of Catalonia”, we read in the request from three years ago.

However, a motion of censure in the then municipal government of the PP signed by the PSOE, Cs and Cambiemos (Vamos), prevented the judicial claim of the manuscript from becoming effective in 2022. And it is a claim independent of the political color of the municipal government in force since 1931 in which the document reappears.
