The Russian Armed Forces have used the Shahed-136, equipped with Starlink satellite communications, for the first time – DE

During today’s nighttime attack on targets in Ukraine, the Russian Armed Forces used a Shahed-136 (Geranium-2) drone equipped with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite communications, Defense Express reported.

“The Russian Armed Forces installed Starlink on Shahed-136 – this is an unlimited communication range for a UAV flying 2,000 km. This is the first time an adversary has used Shahed with Starlink, but it is unlikely to be the last.” — writes Defense Express.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces are alleged to have shot down a drone equipped with Starlink satellite communications while repelling a nighttime attack by the Russian Armed Forces on targets in Ukraine.

“This is a means of receiving information from the drone and the ability to transmit information from it and change the flight task at any distance. That is, the transformation of the Shahed into a reconnaissance weapon,” DE said, as quoted by the Strana publication.

DE reports that such communication may be necessary for the Russian Armed Forces to transmit, for example, information collected by radio equipment about the location of the positions of Ukrainian air defence systems or, if the drone is equipped with cameras, images. At the same time, in a mode that is unlikely to be solved, DE stresses.

“It should also be added that thanks to Starlink and the installed camera, the Russian Federation can use Shahed as an extremely long-range loitering munition with the ability to conduct additional reconnaissance and attack even moving targets.” – says the article.
