The Russian government did not support the bill on the abolition of the Unified State Exam

The government did not support the bill to abolish the Unified State Exam (USE) in favor of traditional state exams, Yaroslav Nilov, one of the authors of the initiative and head of the State Duma Committee on Social Policy, told RIA Novosti.

Work on reforming the Unified State Exam will continue, he said. The MP said he had already discussed the initiative with experts and would soon communicate best practices to relevant departments.

The bill was submitted to the State Duma in early June. The authors of the initiative pointed out among the advantages of cancelling the Unified State Exam the rejection of “meaningless memorization of test answers,” as well as the preservation of the physical and psychological health of graduates. They stressed that the content of the Unified State Exam is “divorced from the school curriculum” and that the services of tutors necessary for preparing for the exam are “inaccessible to many parents.”

The Unified State Exam was introduced in 2009. The conduct of the exam has repeatedly become a topic of debate. At the same time, Rosobrnadzor opposed the abolition of the Unified State Exam. The Prime Minister shares the same opinion. Mikhail Mishustinwho described the exam as a “social elevator” for schoolchildren in the regions.
