The mayor of Letur, Sergio Marín, believes that it is necessary to “search for hydraulic solutions both upstream and downstream of the municipality” to prevent floods like that of October 29 from happening again. “It is clear that the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) will have a lot to say and You will need to come up with a solution to this problem.», he insisted, even if it is now “hasty” to decide on the infrastructures to be built so that “this does not happen again”.
Regarding the situation in which the city finds itself two weeks after the DANA which caused much material damage, in addition to six deaths, Marín explained that there are “many houses” in the part of the historical and artistic complex in which “in the coming days or weeks”, they will have to be supplied with drinking water, electricity and sewers.
“We are working in coordination with the Community Council of Castilla-La Mancha to advance and provide services to these houses so that families who are relocated to other houses can access this area as quickly as possible, but it is necessary to be be patient because the situation is complicated,” he commented. It should be remembered that around forty families had to be relocated in the town of Albacete.
For now, “Ten houses have already been demolished and we must continue to evaluate. “A careful sorting is carried out, house by house, to see how to act inside.” When asked if they would be rebuilt in the same location, the mayor avoided commenting: “Currently, the demolition of these buildings is underway to allow safe work in this area. Later, the technicians, the architects, will have to tell us whether it is appropriate to build in the areas affected by the flood.
He finally underlined the “patience” of the social workers deployed in Letur to treat those affected. “They do an in-depth study of the situation of families and people, which is the most important,” he assured.
On the other hand, the President of Castile-La Mancha announced that it is expected that this Wednesday the children of Letur will return to their educational center after their temporary stay at the Socovos school. The youngest will benefit from “psychological support” to “deal with a situation that is so unfair for their age”.
The mayor of Mira: “All the technicians reported certain actions to us”
For its part, in Mira, the priority is to take care of the “high” number of families who found themselves in a vulnerable situation after the passage of DANA, in addition to recovering the health center that was “razed” supervised housing for the elderly and playgrounds, according to its mayor, Miriam Lava.
“In some cases, these are people of Romanian nationality who were starting a life project in Mira with young children,” Lava said, hoping that they will be “fully protected” by social services.
Asked about the construction of certain infrastructures that would prevent uncontrolled flooding of the river, the mayor said that it would be the Hydrographic Confederation of Júcar (CHJ) which would provide the solution. “From the beginning, all the technicians we received in the municipality reported certain actions in this direction, but it will be necessary to assess the risk, which areas are prone to flooding, which are not,” he added . And he gave as an example that the houses on the right bank of the river “have existed there since time immemorial” and have never been affected by an “unheard of” phenomenon like that of October 29.
