Yolanda Díaz said that Spain is 80 billion euros away from reaching the fiscal pressure that currently exists in the European Union, which is why she urged it to develop a new tax reform in the country.
During a debate in Congress on taxation organized by Sumar, Díaz pointed out that Spain is about five points ahead in terms of tax burden compared to the European average, but that when the National Institute of Statistics (INE) examines the figures, the gross domestic product (GDP), this distance will be extended to seven points. “We are talking about 80 billion euros,” Díaz said in his speech.
In this scenario, the vice president called for a tax reform that helps address the “epochal challenges” that Spanish society faces. Díaz indicated that this reform was currently being negotiated with the PSOE and recognized that multinationals are “very far away” in terms of taxation from their government partner.
The government of Pedro Sánchez and Yolanda Díaz has raised almost 70 taxes since coming to power in June 2018. It is the Executive that has recorded the most tax collections and is targeting this year the record of 300,000 million.
In addition to taxes, Yolanda Díaz put on the table the permanence of extraordinary taxes on banks and energy, lowering the threshold for applying the tax to large fortunes from three million to one million, updating the residence habitual or by harmonizing inheritance taxes.
Yolanda Díaz also criticized that the corporate tax “is poorly designed” because it presents “tax holes” due to deductions and bonuses, which in practice makes a small self-employed person pay “much more ” than a big company. .
“This is such a brutal tax injustice that I think this is an absolutely winning debate among citizens,” the vice president added.
