On May 24, 2013, an inexplicable event shook the peaceful lives of the residents of number 1 Almagro Street, in Malaga. What started out as a normal day, with neighbors immersed in their daily routine, quickly turned into a scene worthy of a horror filmwhen a series of paranormal phenomena erupt in the building. In total, more than twenty witnesses witnessed what some do not hesitate to describe as one of the most shocking episodes of this type in Spain.
The first events: a morning of terror
He was the good researcher from Malaga Jose Manuel Frias who reported all this. It started shortly after nine thirty in the morning. María García, concierge of the building and neighbor of 5ºD, was carrying out her usual tasks in the portal. Without notice, a loud explosion next to him made her jump. Turning around, he discovers a broken light bulb on the ground, but the strangest thing is that there was no lamp on the ceiling. Stunned, she heard more explosions and watched as more glass shattered around her. Disoriented, she quickly called the former concierge, Francisco Delgado, who also lived in the same building.
When Francisco arrived at the scene, he found not only María alarmed, but also several neighbors who, attracted by the noise, began to gather in front of the door. What they saw left them perplexed: light bulbs that explode for no apparent reason and objects that seem to appear out of nowhere just as they hit the ground. According to Francisco, “the light bulbs didn’t fall, they just materialized just before exploding.”
The situation reaches a new level of confusion when, among the remains of a broken skylight, a heavy key. María, even more terrified, recognized the object: it was a tool kept in the accounting room, a closed space to which no one had access. This added more items to the list of what appeared to be a completely irrational event.
Unexplained phenomena
As the morning progressed, the phenomena did not stop. While María tried to clean the windows to avoid accidents, Francisco decided to check the counter, where he noticed that several stored light bulbs were missing. Yet those same bulbs appeared outside, exploding violently in front of astonished neighbors. “The boxes where we kept the bulbs they piled up alone in the trash can” said Francisco. The witnesses, who were mostly ordinary people and had no interest in the paranormal, could not believe their eyes.
By lunchtime, the number of curious people had increased considerably, and with them, the number of strange phenomena. Flower pots and ceiling lights were moved by “invisible hands.” Even a heavy piece of furniture in the accounting room was knocked over without anyone touching it. Despite the seriousness of the events, fortunately no one was injured. However, the tension in the building was palpable and many witnesses began to speculate about the cause of the events.
The situation culminated with a sharp bang on the roof of the gate, about three meters high, as if an invisible hand had struck violently. This latest impact left a concave mark on the plaster, leading some neighbors to wonder if they were witnessing a supernatural manifestation.
What initially seemed limited to the gate quickly expanded to other parts of the building. One of the neighbors, visibly nervous about the events, decided to leave the area. However, upon arriving at nearby San Lázaro Street, he saw how a twelve kilo fire extinguisher fell from the sky, strike near him. The strangest thing is that the fire extinguisher came from the meter room and, despite the fall, it suffered no damage.
Inside the building, other neighbors began to inspect their homes, discovering that the strange phenomena were repeating themselves on different floors. Ceilings that disappeared from one floor reappeared on another, exploding into a thousand pieces. Trinidad Quintana, resident of 2ºB, found broken glass in front of the door of his house, with no apparent explanation.
The day ended with the arrival of the local police and a fire brigade. Although officers searched the building, they could not find a logical cause for what happened. One of the firefighters even witnessed how a padlock from the accounts room materialized next to him and slammed against the wall.
Possible reactions and explanations
The media impact was not long in coming. The following weekend, the building became the center of attention of many curious people and the media. Theories about the origin of phenomena ranged from spirits to supernatural forces. On Monday, May 27, local authorities, including the security advisor as well as the police and fire chiefs, went to the scene to try to clarify what had happened. However, they were unable to offer any conclusive explanation.
While everything seemed to have calmed down, the phenomenon resurfaced on Tuesday May 28. A painting with nautical motifs, firmly anchored to the wall, was violently dismantled. Shortly afterwards, at an adjacent bar with a back door into the building, a plasma television was thrown from its stand and crashed to the ground. The bar owner, frustrated, closed the establishment without wanting to comment on the incident.
The investigation into the phenomenon revealed details that indicated that building number 1 on Almagro Street was no stranger to the paranormal. According to some neighbors, we have been talking for years about small incidentslike objects changing place or strange sounds in empty houses. One day, an elderly couple was accused by neighbors of moving furniture at night, when in reality they could barely move due to their advanced age.
An impromptu test with a compass suggested the possible presence of electromagnetic disturbances on site. As the compass passed under the broken skylight, the instrument reversed its position, indicating a possible environmental anomaly.
Although there is no official explanation for this phenomenon, some neighbors believed that The paranormal activity could be linked to the arrival of new tenants. Since they moved in, unexplained events have become more frequent and the most violent events seem to happen when they are present. The tenants themselves admitted that strange phenomena also occurred in their accommodation.
Despite the unknowns, the mystery remained latent. Some neighbors suggested that a blessing be done to the building in an attempt to stop the paranormal events. Meanwhile, Malaga continues to be the center of attention for supernatural researchers, attracted by the enigma of Almagro Street.
