Mari Ábrego Santesteban (1944 – 2018) He died in April 2018, aged 73, following a long illness. Possessing one of the most complete records in Himalayan and national mountaineering, he has received the trophy for best Navarrese athlete on several occasions.
The Superior Sports Council awarded him the Silver Medal for the 1980 expedition to Dhaulagiri and the Government of Navarre awarded him the prize Gold medal for sporting merit.
Best known for being the first mountaineer at the national level, along with Josema Casimiro, to climb K-2 on June 23, 1986, his mountaineering career was marked by other milestones, such as the first to reach the summit of Aconcagua on the south face in alpine style, Huamashraju on the north ridge and Huandoy Norte on the east face.
