The summer of 2024 was the hottest on record in the Northern Hemisphere

Last summer was the warmest in the history of meteorological observations in the Northern Hemisphere.

According to the report, global temperatures from June to August were 0.69°C above historical averages, thus renewing the previous record high recorded last year. Overall, the researchers noted, climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of heat waves, triggering extreme weather events ranging from droughts and wildfires to severe storms and floods. Over the past 12 months, global average temperatures have been 1.64°C higher than pre-industrial levels, exceeding the 1.5°C target set in the Paris climate agreement.

June-August temperatures across Europe were 1.54°C higher than the 1991-2020 average. The most extreme conditions were recorded in the Mediterranean region and Eastern Europe, while the UK, Iceland, parts of Ireland, the west coast of Portugal and southern Norway were cooler than normal.

It should be noted that the Paris climate agreement was adopted in 2015 and aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit the rise in global temperature this century. The countries that have signed it commit to keeping the increase in the global average temperature well below 2 °C and to strive to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C. Russia signed the agreement in April 2016 and accepted it in 2019.
