The suspect had already been arrested twice for drunk driving, according to prosecutors.

The man accused of killing a police officer in Mougins (Alpes-Maritimes) on Monday evening already had 10 previous convictions and had been arrested twice for drunk and/or drugged driving, the Grasse public prosecutor’s office said on Thursday, August 28.

“All the sentences to which he was sentenced have been carried out”The Prosecutor’s Office insisted in its press release published on Thursday, specifying that of these 10 convictions “Six of them refer to traffic violations and the other four to assaults on people”.

The 39-year-old man was sentenced on 9 May 2018 by the Grasse court to two months in prison. “executed in the form of house arrest under electronic surveillance” for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

He was also arrested on September 23, 2023 for drunk driving, a crime for which his sentence of four months’ license suspension and a 600 euro fine would be officially notified to him on September 12, in two weeks.

On Wednesday, during a ceremony in Mandelieu-La Napoule, where the motorized platoon to which her husband belonged was stationed, Harmonie Comyn, the widow of the gendarme, accused France of having killed her husband: “France killed my husband because of its inadequacy, its laxity and its excessive tolerance”said.

The tragedy occurred at around 8.40pm on Monday when a person driving a black BMW refused to stop, according to the gendarmerie. The vehicle violently ran over Eric Comyn while he and his colleagues were carrying out a routine traffic check on an exit ramp of the A8 motorway.

A non-commissioned officer, member of the motorized platoon of the gendarmerie, he was 54 years old and father of two children. Arrested in Cannes at around 4 a.m. on Monday to Tuesday, approximately eight hours after the events, the suspect had a positive blood alcohol level. He was then brought before an investigating judge, accused, in particular, of “murder of a person holding public authority”and placed in preventive detention, the Grasse prosecutor’s office said Wednesday evening.
