“The Telegraph”: “Baku offers more than you expect”

The famous British publication “The Telegraph” published an article about the beauty of Azerbaijan and the capital Baku.

Oku.Az Reports that journalist Anna Selby, author of the article, visited our country during COP29 and shared her impressions with readers.

According to him, Baku is a small treasure.

“Baku is the center of the ancient Silk Road on the coast of the Caspian Sea. In the Old City there are still caravanserais – modern hotels and restaurants.

At the center of these cobbled streets is the Palace of the Shirvanshahs (described by UNESCO as an “architectural pearl”). It is a labyrinth with a mausoleum, baths, crypts, an ancient mosque and underground prisons. Built as a symbol of the ancient fire-loving Zoroastrians nearby, the Maiden’s Tower is believed to have been built in the 12th century. There were many invaders in this city, they all left their mark. For example, Peter the Great came from Russia and is best remembered for damaging the minaret of an ancient mosque.

Until recently, Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet Empire. After gaining independence, the city of Baku became even more beautiful. Some areas of Baku, with its wide tree-lined boulevards, are strangely reminiscent of Paris. The city that preserves its antiquity is also modern. Three flame-shaped skyscrapers illuminate the city’s night sky.

Unlike its neighbor Iran, Azerbaijan has a fairly liberal culture. Everyone wears Western clothes and English is widely spoken. Baku has a thriving nightlife with excellent bars and restaurants. In this Muslim country, wine is not only drunk, but it is also produced here. Like its neighbors Georgia and Armenia, Azerbaijan has a deeply rooted winemaking history dating back to before the arrival of Islam. In short, Baku offers you more than you expect,” the article states.
