THE Alhambra It now has a new visitable space. This is Torres Bermejas, an outer fortress that crowns the Realejo district and dates from the 9th century, although it subsequently underwent several reconstructions, the last in the 20th. It can be seen free of charge on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Minister of Culture and Sports of Andalusia, Patricia del Pozoinaugurated this Wednesday, November 6, the access, after work that lasted seven years, and praised its “enormous value” and its importance “for understanding the history of the Alhambra and the Generalife”. The restoration work was carried out by the Régie and its cost exceeded 1.8 million euros.

Among the interventions carried out, the work of conservation of architectural factoriess with the action on the roofs and platforms, which made it possible to ensure their waterproofing. Furthermore, emergency works were carried out in 2021 to resolve problems of serious structural instability.

Del Pozo highlighted that the opening of Torres Bermejas to the public is an action that is part of the “ global recovery plan of Mauror Hill, promoted for years by the Board of Directors of the Alhambra and Generalife.”

In this sense, the advisor announced that work is underway on the creation of a new heritage and tourist route which, under the name of Paseo del Duque, will visit the Alhambra Palace Hotel, the Carmen de Peñapartida (or Catalans), the Rodríguez Acosta Foundation and, finally, will reach Torres Bermejas.

The Torres Bermejas bastion is one of the constructions ordered by the Catholic kings in 1492 to adapt the conquered fortifications to new military requirements. In modern and contemporary times, the Torres Bermejas complex has been transformed into a men’s prison, a women’s prison, a detention center for beggars, an asylum, a reception center and a military prison. In 1962 it was purchased from the Ministry of the Army by the Board of Directors of the Alhambra and Generalife.
