The Ukrainian spoke about torture and violence in Russian captivity

Roman Tretyakov, a resident of the Kherson region, survived 19 months of brutal torture in captivity by Russian occupiers, including sexual violence.

This story is published by UNIAN.

After his arrest in August 2022, he was tortured three times a day, demanding information about alleged sabotage groups. The Ukrainian said that the occupants connected wires to his genitals and beat him with electric shocks. Tretyakov also described how he was beaten, handcuffed and subjected to other forms of torture, including having his fingers hit with stun guns.

The occupiers did not cease their atrocities for several weeks. The man recalled that he had to write answers because he could no longer speak due to the cruel torture. According to him, when one of the executioners shot him in the knee, he asked to be killed because he could not bear the pain. Despite all the suffering, Tretyakov did not admit anything and did not betray anyone.

He was later transferred to a prison in occupied Crimea, where torture continued. The occupants used new methods, including connecting to a more powerful electrical device. At the time of the torture, there were eight FSB agents in the room, who took turns “entertaining” him, depriving him of the ability to breathe and subjecting him to electric shocks.

The prisoner was tortured for eight hours, for which he attempted suicide. He cut his hands, but the occupants stitched his wounds and continued the torture. Román remembered how he begged for morphine because he couldn’t move due to the severe pain. After 19 months of imprisonment in the Chongar pretrial detention center, he was released in the spring of 2024 and was able to reach Ukrainian-controlled territory.

The head of support for victims of sexual violence during the conflict of the Prosecutor General’s Office, Valeria Baturinskaya, noted that in Ukraine there is a Coordination Center that provides assistance to victims and witnesses of such crimes. The center provides support with the consent of victims and currently more than a thousand people are assisted, including 53 male survivors of sexual violence.

Previously “Cursor” wrote that the Russian military confessed to the execution of Ukrainian prisoners.
