“The agreement reached at COP29 lays the foundations for future steps in the fight against climate change.”
Oku.Az reports, this is stated in the statement by the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres.
“The end of COP29 brings to an end a difficult year marked by record temperatures and climate disasters, while emissions continue to rise,” said A. Guterres.
He emphasized the critical need for financing for developing countries that are lagging behind in debt burdens, climate crises and the transition to renewable energy sources.
According to him, the agreement reached at COP29 is vital to maintaining the goal of keeping global warming at 1.5°C. “Countries are up to the task. I expected more ambitious results on financing and mitigation, but this agreement provides a solid basis for future action,” he added.
The Secretary-General emphasized the importance of quickly turning pledges into action: “Pledges must quickly be turned into real funds. All countries must join forces to achieve the new funding target.”
Guterres also highlighted key achievements of COP29, including progress in reducing emissions, accelerating the energy transition and harmonizing approaches to carbon markets. He called on countries, especially the G20, to present new National Climate Action Plans to meet the 1.5°C goal well before COP30:
“The main tasks for the future are effective measures such as debt reduction, increasing preferential financing and simplifying access to funds.”
In conclusion, Guterres thanked the government of Azerbaijan and COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev for their outstanding leadership, as well as UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Still and the UN team for their important contributions:
“COP29 was an important step forward. Now we all need the agreements reached to be a success.”
