The streets of Valdemoro were born with a striking sign that does not go unnoticed by its neighbors. Apparently, Juan was allegedly unfaithful to the person who posted QR codes with images exposing his actions throughout the municipality. However, reality is different. The advertised photos do not exist. Even Juan isn’t real. Well, it’s an advertising campaign that uses the morbidity of good gossip to attract the attention of everyone passing by.
“John, you cheated on me. I’ll leave the photos so everyone can see what you’re doing. This can be read in the Comic Sans typography captured on a hanging sheet of paper in A4 format, on which there is also a QR. When curious people open their cell phone camera to scan it, they get a big surprise. There is no image of this individual’s infidelity, but rather a brand that uses creativity to reach more people.
A chain of “smash” burgers in Peru popularized this method. The team dedicated itself to sticking several copies of the poster in different areas of the city and recorded from afar the reactions of those who stopped to scan it: those surprised could only laugh when they saw that the QR code did not reveal the photos, but rather redirected to the Instagram profile of this restaurant.
The impact generated by this “reel” – with nearly 400,000 likes, 2,000 comments and hundreds of shares – went around the world and is being replicated by different companies as a method of promotion.
In the case of Valdemoro, where this campaign also reached, the QR seems to have been deactivated by the creator, so the identity of the person responsible for displaying these pages in this city of Madrid is unknown.
