THE European Unionthrough the consortium Mission Cancergranted 12 million euros to the SPACETIME project, an initiative that aims to advance the lung cancer researchLed by Dutch scientists Dr Febe van Maldegem and Dr Marieke Fransen, the project will bring together 15 partners from 7 European countries for the next five years.
Among the research centers participating, there is the Best University in Navarrewith the Clinic of the University of Navarrawho will bring their experience in the fight against lung cancer. The Cima group, led by Dr. Luis Montuengawill focus on the study of biological models lung cancer and identification of molecular markers.
“This is a very ambitious project aimed at better understanding lung cancer biologyusing very innovative technologies“explains Dr. Montuenga, who also heads the Cima Lungsearch Group. For his part, Dr. Luis SeijoDirector of the Department of Pulmonology at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra, adds: “We will apply our experience in early detection lung cancer to better understand the early stages of disease progression in patients.
The SPACETIME project aims to improving the lives of more than 3 million people before 2030, focusing on preventing, curing and improving cancer treatment, as well as the quality of life of patients. In addition, it seeks to deepen knowledge of the tumor microenvironment, composed of cancer, immune and support cells, which can influence the effectiveness of treatments such as immunotherapy.
The ultimate goal of SPACETIME is provide clinicians with the tools necessary to predict more accurately which treatment will be most effective for each patientthereby improving the possibilities of therapeutic success in lung cancer.
