The US ambassador to the UN harshly criticized Israel

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield condemned Israel’s actions to resolve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, as well as its attempts to ban UNRWA from operating in the Jewish state.

The IDF said on Sunday that its troops had surrounded the Gaza Strip town of Jabaliya in a new ground operation targeting Hamas’ attempts to reassert its position in the northern Strip. Ahead of the operation, the IDF issued a new round of evacuation orders for cities in the area and said it was prepared to order the evacuation of the entire northern Gaza Strip, where tens of thousands of Palestinians still live.

“The United States is concerned about the situation in northern Gaza, including Israel’s announcement of a new evacuation order for several communities. We are especially concerned that Palestinian civilians have nowhere safe to go,” Thomas-Greenfield said. at a Security Council meeting in the Middle East. This.

“There are already appalling reports of miserable conditions in the humanitarian zone in south-central Gaza, where more than 1.5 million displaced civilians have fled. These catastrophic conditions were predicted months ago but have not yet been resolved. This must change immediately.” “We call on Israel to take urgent steps to do so, and I reiterate that the United States hopes that Palestinian civilians, including those evacuees from the north, will be allowed to return to their communities and rebuild,” the US ambassador added.

“We are also concerned about recent measures by the Israeli government to restrict the flow of goods into Gaza. Combined with the new bureaucratic restrictions imposed on humanitarian supplies from Jordan and the closure of most border crossings in recent weeks, these “Restrictions will only lead to more suffering in Gaza.” Thomas-Greenfield said.

Referring to recent pressure in the Knesset for legislation aimed at banning UNRWA activities in Israel and prohibiting Israeli authorities from contacting officials at the UN aid agency for the Palestinians, Thomas-Greenfield said the United States is “deeply concerned” by the proposals.

Noting the allegations against UNRWA, he said only a “small percentage” of its staff had links to terrorist groups and were involved in the October 7 attack.

“At the same time, we know that UN staff, including UNRWA staff, are vital to humanitarian assistance in Gaza and are at great risk in doing their work,” the US ambassador said, calling on Israel to provide more information on the accusations against UNRWA. He also pushed the agency to do a better job addressing these issues.
