Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called claims by some American analysts that Moscow directly and indirectly interfered in the parliamentary elections in Georgia as lies.
“The Americans try to attribute to us what they themselves are doing. As they say, a thief’s hat is on fire. Washington continues to actively exploit the myth it itself generated about Russian interference in any election, whether “at home” or in third countries. If somewhere in the voting results it appears that the United States does not like to win, Russia is immediately blamed for the “wrong” choice of the voters.” — RIA Novosti quotes the Minister.
Lavrov highlighted “the unprecedented interference of Westerners in the internal affairs of Georgia, their shameless pressure on the authorities and voters of this country.”
“The Americans, and also the EU, are artificially trying to present the current electoral process in Georgia as a strategic choice between Russia and the West. By doing so, they want to put Georgia and other states of the post-Soviet space at a false fork in the road. In fact, we are talking about a choice between sovereign development based on national interests and external management, between traditional values and neoliberal attitudes imposed from outside.” – stated the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The people of Georgia have made their choice and Moscow treats them with respect, the minister noted. We are willing to continue the process of normalization of bilateral relations, he stated.
As reported EADaily On October 26, the ruling Georgian Dream won the elections in Georgia, obtaining almost 54% of the vote. Four other opposition parties have overcome the five percent barrier to enter parliament, but they intend to boycott the work of the new convocation of parliament. The opposition is holding demonstrations demanding re-elections under “international administration.”
