South Dakota Senator John Thune won the election to lead the Republican majority in the Senate, the upper house of the US Congress, the Associated Press reports.

In the second round he obtained 29 votes out of 53. Thune congratulated him on his election. donald trumpand indicated that he hopes to work with him. Thune has been a South Dakota senator since 2005.

He served as Republican leader in the United States Senate. Mitch McConnellHe held this position for 18 years. He began his career in Congress at age 42 under the presidency ronald reagan. McConnell led Republicans in the Senate for the longest time of any party leader (both Republican and Democrat) in American history. He announced that he would resign.

Republican congressmen nominated their current boss for the position of speaker of the House of Representatives Michael Johnson. He has held this position since October 2023, The Hill reports.

During the closed-door meeting, Johnson, who had no opponents, received unanimous support. The final vote on his candidacy will take place on January 3, 2025, RBC clarifies.
