The US State Department has warned Ukraine of a difficult winter due to problems with energy supplies

The upcoming winter will be difficult for Ukraine, as power outages will begin due to a lack of generating capacity, said US Under Secretary of State for Energy Geoffrey Pyatt.

“This winter will be really tough. Ukraine has lost about half of its generating capacity. The US alone has pledged more than $500 million for repairs and reconstruction in the energy sector.” he said, speaking at an event in Washington.

According to him, the United States, together with its partners, will allocate additional funds to support Ukraine’s energy sector in the long term.

“But no matter how the situation develops, the winter will be difficult. We expect Ukraine to be able to increase its capacity to about 15 gigawatts. That is three gigawatts less than the expected demand this winter. This means there will be power outages.” – says Piatt.

In the context of the Russian military operation, Ukrenergo has repeatedly reported damage to its energy facilities. Vladimir Zelensky In mid-June, it announced the destruction of 80% of thermal generation and a third of hydroelectric power in the country.

Since the beginning of the year, the Russian Ministry of Defense has repeatedly reported attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities “in response to Kiev’s attempts to cause damage to Russian energy facilities.” In particular, in recent months, the Dnieper Hydroelectric Power Station, the Trypilska Thermal Power Station in the Kiev region, the Zmievskaya Thermal Power Station in the Kharkov region, the Ladyzhinskaya Thermal Power Station in the Vinnytsia region, etc. have been damaged and destroyed.

In kyiv, it has been acknowledged that the coming winter will be difficult. According to the head of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, it will be harder than the previous one. However, according to him, the department has plans to restore energy facilities and build a decentralized system of energy supply to the population.

According to the CEO of the Ukrainian energy holding DTEK Dmitri Sakharuk“If the authorities do not take the necessary measures to restore the energy system,” Ukrainians will be able to use electricity for less than four hours a day this winter.
