The Second Section of the Provincial Court of Palma holds this Tuesday the preview of the trial of a gang made up of five thieves who committed five robberies with force in houses with high purchasing power in Mallorca. The prosecution is demanding up to 93 years in prison for the theft of cash and objects worth almost half a million euros.
To this must be added the crimes of membership in a criminal organization, usurpation of public functions, identity falsification, attack against an agent of authority and drug trafficking. Four of them face sentences of 19 years in prison, while for the fifth they are asking for 17 years.
According to the prosecutor in his indictment, the five accused, all Chilean nationality minus one Colombianlived in Barcelona and periodically traveled to Mallorca, for a few days during the summer, to commit violent thefts in luxury chalets located in the municipalities of Andratx and Calviàas well as to distribute MDMA, amphetamines and ketamine.
Since their arrival at Palma Airport in August 2023 and over the following ten days, they have committed up to five thefts, during which money and items were stolen, starting from from luxury watches to diamond-encrusted jewelry and handbagsvalued at 436,800 euros.
Investigations carried out by the Civil Guard confirmed that the gang of thieves had carried out prior surveillance of their potential targets and that they were traveling in high-end rental vehicles “in order not to arouse suspicion” on the luxury complexes in which they operated, according to the prosecution.
Once the house was selected, they entered the premises by jumping over the fence, They broke the window frames and they were looking for valuable items or safes. They always wore balaclavas, scarves and gloves to avoid leaving footprints or being recognized.
After the five robberies were committed, Armed Institute investigators followed two of the suspects to the airport. One of them was intercepted and arrested while trying to return to Barcelona with several stolen items.
The other returned to the house they had rented in Palma, where the other three suspected gang members were, where they were all arrested. One of them resisted and injured one of the civil guards.
In the house they found various quantities of MDMA, amphetamines and ketamine which, according to the indictment, they distributed and sold in Majorca. Tools for preparing drug doses were also involved, as well as others used in the robberies.
Regarding the stolen items, investigators were only able to recover part of them with a total value of 21,000 euros, but the prosecution is asking the defendants to compensate the five victims for a total of 160,619 euros.
