They demand the suspension of a bullfighting event for people with achondroplasia in a city of Toledo

The Franz Weber Foundation has denounced the promotion of a “bullfighting comedy show” with people with achondroplasia scheduled for September 14 in the municipality of Numancia de la Sagra, in the province of Toledo.

They recall that this type of calls contravene Royal Legislative Decree 1/2013, of November 29, which approves the revised text of the General Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and their Social Inclusion.

They will file their complaint with the Council of Communities to request the immediate suspension of the appeal in accordance with the state framework.

Thus, they base their writing on the thirteenth additional provision, which, in Article 2, states that “shows or recreational activities in which disabled persons or this circumstance are used to provoke ridicule, ridicule or ridicule of the public in a manner contrary to the respect due to human dignity are prohibited.

They also point out that there are groups such as the National Association for Growth Problems, the ALPE Achondroplasia Foundation, ADEE Spain, Afapac, CERMI or the ONCE Foundation that have worked for years to have this regulation ratified, and since October 2022 there has been a program aimed at improving the employability of people with achondroplasia outside of these events.

The Foundation considers it “very serious” that the City Hall itself is sponsoring this event, thus contributing to perpetuating stereotypes about how people with achondroplasia are represented in public events.

Even the United Nations Committee on Persons with Disabilities warned Spain in 2019 about this image that occurs during bullfighting events, urging it to prohibit this type of act that causes humiliation and degradation due to their simple physical condition.

Last year, they point out, Extremadura, the Region of Murcia, Castilla y León and the Andalusian government itself denied similar acts based on the regulatory framework in force throughout Spain. FFW does not rule out taking other administrative and legal actions to paralyze “a discriminatory activity, which violates the rights of a vulnerable group ridiculed by these calls.”
