They free the two Spanish women who went to Syria to join Daesh with their jihadist husbands

THE National Court released, pending trial, the two Spanish women repatriated from Syria in January 2023, after having travelled to that country to join the Islamic State terrorist network and having children with jihadists.

The minors were also rescued and transferred to Spain along with the two women, called Yolande Martinez And Luna Fernandez.

This Monday, a hearing was held at the National Court to decide the fate of the accused, whose trial is scheduled soon for an alleged offence of integration into a terrorist organisation. The criminal court finally decided not to extend their pre-trial detention and released them “immediately” with precautionary measures.

From now on, the two defendants will be required to appear every week before the National Court, they will not have passports and will not be able to leave Spain.

This was requested by the prosecution and the defense of the two women. Association of Victims of Terrorism (AVT) opposed this release.

In separate resolutions, the Fourth Criminal Chamber explains that it takes this decision “taking into account the time that has elapsed since the provisional detention was issued and taking into account the fact that the circumstances that led the investigating judge at the time to adopt this measure have varied, There is currently no risk of leakage“.

Last January, the judge of the National Court Santiago Pedraz He prosecuted the two women for the crime of joining the terrorist organization.

The magistrate then explained that the two accused had participated in Spain in recruitment activities for the jihadist organization Islamic State/Daeshbefore leaving voluntarily for Syria with their husbands, members of the said terrorist group. One was a fighter and the other a member of a jihadist tribunal.

They did so, the judge noted in early 2024, “by accepting the same fate as them, once the pseudo-Islamic caliphate was proclaimed, in June 2014, by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi [entonces líder de Daesh] and with all the will to maintain their integration into the aforementioned terrorist organization.

Martínez and Fernández only asked to be repatriated to Spain after the siege and fall of the Syrian city of Baguz. They also allegedly indoctrinated their children in favor of violent jihad.
