A cayuco with 81 immigrants of sub-Saharan origin on board, including three women and three minorswas intercepted this Monday in the waters southwest of El Hierro, maritime rescue sources informed Europa Press.
The boat was detected by the SIVE radar at 8.5 miles southwest of the island, about 16 kilometers near the La Restinga pier, the Tenerife Rescue Coordination Center activated the Mizar rescue boat, which accompanied the canoe to land safely.
The 81 migrants on board appeared to be in good health, as confirmed by SUC and Red Cross troops who provided them with first aid on the dock.
More workers
The Government Council of the Canary Islands has approved a shock plan of 2.2 million for the years 2024 and 2025 that will allow the hiring of 39 workers to improve the response to the reception of unaccompanied migrant minors.
More precisely, they will be 19 social workers and around twenty administrative staffwhich strengthen the field of social work, and speed up the processing of documents for these minors, handle communications to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, carry out family reunifications, manage transfers of minors to the Peninsula or other territories of the European Union or pursue international protection procedures.
The aim of this measure is to promote the processing of the files of the 5,300 unaccompanied migrant minors that the Canary Islands currently host, as well as to guarantee the arrival of unaccompanied minors on the Canary Islands coast in the coming weeks.
Currently, the Regional Executive has 81 centres open to care for these minors.
