The Bishopric of Mallorca and the El Instante Foundation presented the project on which they collaborated. The artist was present at the press conference José María Sicilia and Mn. Francesc Vicens, Episcopal Vicar for the Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Bishopric of Majorca.
In 2024, the Bishopric of Mallorca and the El Instante Foundation worked to bring to life the new creation of the artist José María Sicilia, Mass for the dead too late. The creation of Sicília follows the long tradition of composing Requiems throughout the history of sacred music, going even further and encompassing it within the concept of total art.
With this objective, Sicilia not only composed the non-liturgical texts of the mass and surrounded herself with collaborators for the composition of the music, but created liturgical elements such as the celebrant’s chasuble, bells who will participate in the celebration and the projections that can be seen at certain moments of the mass.
This creative process was carried out by the artist with the constant support of the Bishopric of Mallorca, regarding the liturgical and theological themes of the work.
The original idea of the work focuses on the resurrection, taking as an analogy a dialogue between a caterpillar and a butterfly. The wish of the Bishopric and the El Instante Foundation is to allow a dialogue between contemporary art and faith, by uniting modernity and tradition such as the Mass of the Dead.
