He received a message in which he was assured that he would receive 150,000 euros to distribute charitably.
Service line 017 “Your help in cybersecurity” from the National Institute of Cybersecurity (Incibe) provided help to a senior user who they attempted to scam with a fake donation to use for charitable purposes.
The man contacted the free and confidential telephone number 017 after receiving a private message via the social network Facebook, where a profile of a an unknown person claimed that he had been chosen to receive 150,000 euros in order to distribute them charitably.
Not understanding the situation, the man asked for more information from his interlocutor, who assured him that the money belonged to a very old, sick woman admitted to a hospital in another country. Furthermore, the next day, a person identifying himself as the old woman’s lawyer called him, corroborating the information and telling him that he was going to send him photos of the hospitalized woman so that he could have confidence that everything was true.
The user, who was unsure of what was going on, decided to contact Incibe for help and advice.. From the helpline it was explained to him that they were trying to deceive him and that it was a fraud, because in this type of situation cybercriminals usually confuse the victim into believing that they are will pay him money, although in reality they will try to scam him out of an economic sum or use him to launder money.
From Incibe they recommended that you do not follow any type of indication, do not provide personal or banking information, block the user who contacted him and report it to the social network, as well as block the telephone number that called it and report it through the citizen collaboration tools of the state security forces and agencies.
