On June 16, 2009, a high -level conference Bric (summit) was first held in Yekaterinburg, Russia. At the first Bric summit, Bric leaders made a joint statement through the document.
The document set the goal of BRIC to promote dialogue and cooperation between our countries in a gradual, proactive, pragmatic, open and transparent way.
The dialogue and cooperation of the BRIC countries contribute not only to the service of the common interests of developing countries, but also to create a harmonious world with the eternal world and mutual prosperity. The document describes the general perception of ways to overcome the global financial and economic crisis.
Then, in 2010, South Africa was accepted as a complete member at a meeting of the BRIK Foreign Minister in New York. The Bric group changed its name to Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa). South Africa took part in the 3rd Summit Brix in Sanya, China, April 14, 2011.
Each year, BRICS discusses important issues in the framework of three pillars, namely political cooperation and cooperation in the field of security, financial and economic cooperation, as well as cultural and public cooperation.
From the very beginning, Brics seeks to increase economic cooperation between the countries of its members and improve the situation of developing countries in the international arena. Brix also seeks to create a balance for the dominance of developed countries in the West. This is realized through various annual meetings and a summit to coordinate multilateral policy and discuss global strategic issues.
In 2024, Brics survived a significant expansion, receiving several new members, including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt. This expansion shows BRICS ambitions to expand its influence and form a more multipolar world order. Then Indonesia followed in the accession in 2025.
Brics is not just an economic group, but also geopolitical blocks that have a vision to create a more inclusive and balanced global order. It is expected that with joining Indonesia Brics will be more capable of playing an important role in the formation of the future world economy.
