This is how LaSexta told the murder of Asunta Basterra, the story that shocked all of Spain

He the murder of Asunta Basterra is gone in the country, in shock at the fact that his own parents were his murderers and because of this. They, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra, were found guilty of his death.

On September 21, 2013, Asunta’s parents went to the police to report his daughter missing. The next day, her body was found on a forest track in Teo, a small town near Santiago de Compostela. The investigation revealed that Asunta had been sedated with lorazepam and asphyxiated.

From the beginning, the case attracted great attention due to the inconsistencies in the statements of Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra, Asunta’s adoptive parents. Asunta, adopted from China as a baby, lived with them in Santiago de Compostela, and both were well-known public figures: Rosario, a renowned Galician lawyer, and Alfonso, a journalist. The night Asunta disappeared, Rosario Porto claimed to have left her at home in the afternoon and then gone to her grandparents’ family residence. However, security cameras and forensic tests began to reveal that something was wrong.

Rosario Porto was arrested first and a few hours later, Alfonso Basterra. The inconsistencies in their stories and the contradictions in the last moments they saw their daughter directly indicated their involvement in the crime.

In October 2015, both were convicted of Asunta’s murder and each sentenced to 18 years in prison.

One of the great unknowns of this case has always been the motive that pushed Asunta’s parents to commit such an atrocity. No clear and definitive explanation has been found to justify the murder of the girl. Some investigators have considered the hypothesis that Rosario Porto’s personal and psychological problems, added to the toxic and addictive relationship with Alfonso Basterra, could have triggered the crime. Basterra continues to serve his sentence in prisonfrom Teixeiro (La Coruña). In 2020, Rosario Porto committed suicide in Brieva prison (Avila).
