It’s already a fact: Donald Trump won the elections in the United States, and will become the country’s next president four years after leaving – reluctantly, to put it mildly – the White House.
In an election night that wasn’t as close as polls predicted, the Republican Party turned key states red as the counting progressed, while Kamala Harris’ options became diluted.
Since Tuesday and throughout the campaign, the international media have widely covered the electoral event. Shortly before noon (Spanish peninsular time) this Wednesday, the American agency AP declared Donald Trump the winner.
‘The first president with serious crimes’
“Trump triumphs,” headlined the Washington Post on its website, with a special “breaking news” call: “Trump is projected as the winner of the election, becoming the second president to win two non-consecutive terms and the first president with serious results “. crimes. »
“Trump attacks again,” notes the New York Times on its website, which describes the tycoon’s return to the White House “after a dark and difficult campaign” as “surprising.” “His victory opens a new era of uncertainty for the nation,” adds the New York newspaper in another of its articles, which also discusses Trump’s convictions and his authoritarianism.
“Historical return”
The BBC speaks, for its part, of a “historic return”, after the polls showed very close results with Kamala Harris until the day of the vote, when the scales immediately tipped in favor of the Republican.
In France, Le Monde reported that Trump was “certain of his victory” shortly before projections gave him more than the 270 electoral votes needed to win. In one of its many analytical articles linked to current events, Le Monde warns that Donald Trump’s victory “plunges Ukraine into the unknown”.
“A second term which makes us fear the worst”
Libération headlines its main analysis of the results in the United States: “Donald Trump, pushed to the doors of the White House by a nostalgic America”. And he adds a slightly gloomy signed editorial: “Donald Trump in the White House, a second term which raises fears for the worst”.
In Germany, the Frankfurter Allgemeine speaks of “revenge” from Trump and believes that his victory “is not a surprise”.
“The Democrats took little risk”
Also in Germany, Der Spiegel takes Trump to open its cover, which highlights the joy of Republicans in the face of the silence of Kamala Harris. “The Democrats warned too much and risked too little,” says one of their analyses. Another of his main pieces is called “The Trump Shock” and talks about what he learned during the mogul’s first term.
Italy’s Corriere della Sera highlights on its cover a quote from Trump during his winning speech tonight, in which he promised to “end wars.” They also echo Donald Trump’s praise of Elon Musk and silence on Harris, while highlighting the stock market rise of Tesla and Truth, companies owned by Musk and Trump respectively.
For its part, Le Soir Belge evokes the “incredible comeback” of Donald Trump and asks several questions: what will Trump’s first hundred days in the White House look like and whether the “populist era” that his victory opens to the States -United will expand to the rest of the world.
