The tool created by the University of Valencia uses data from the MSI sensor on board the European Space Agency’s Sentinel 2
The Global Change Unit of the University of Valencia has prepared a mud card by the municipalities and districts affected by the passage of the DANA which devastated a good part of the province on Tuesday, October 29 in the afternoon.
Researcher Yves Julien, from the Global Change Unit of the University of Valencia (IPL), led by José A. Sobrino, created a mud map from Utiel to Valencia and Alzira, after the historic flood classified as the worst DANA of the century in the region.
The map used Sentinel 2 satellite data from October 31 and November 5 and can be viewed at the link The Global Change Unit (GCU) is a research group at the University of Valencia that has been working since 1996.
The mud map was prepared using data from the MSI sensor on board the satellite Sentinel 2 of the European Space Agency. To do this, mud pixels were identified by their spectral signature in images from October 31, 2024, which were compared to mud pixels from previous dates.
They then repeated this process with images from November 5, 2024 to complement previous detections. Due to the sensor resolution (10 meters), mud cannot be detected in cities. Furthermore, due to the presence of clouds and cloud shadowsthe extent of the affected area cannot be estimated with certainty. As new images become available, this map will be updated.
