Cruise driver is a rare job, but it has a high supply and low demand, making it a position with no unemployment. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, they make More than 100,000 people are missing to fill all vacant positions.
The reason is that in just 4 years Up to 50 new ships will be launched and this will cause demand to skyrocket. In Spain, for example, the sector employs more than 42,000 workers. And one of them wants to be Ana Martínez in the future, a student at the Faculty of Nautical Sciences of the UPC.
“I remember when he took me, as a child, to visit the bridge and the truth is that I was amazed. I discovered when I was in high school the profession I had to follow and here I am,” she says.
His inspiration is Juan Carlos, with 14 years of experience on board cruise ships.
“On many of these ships The crews are about 2,000 people. and offers many opportunities for employment and professional development,” explains Juan Carlos.
They point out that there is no unemployment here due to high supply and low demand. On board and ashore, there are up to 400 different positions to cover. Now the entire team must undergo this basic training.
“Passenger management, that is, in case of emergency, how to communicate with all passengers. Basic training in protection against illegal acts. And how to access a lifeboat, how to put on a survival suit,” explains Xavier Martínez de Osés, professor at the Faculty of Nautical Studies at the UPC.
Carmen Ravel, artist, will soon start working on a cruise ship: “And in a month I will start my job as a cruise ship artist. The truth is that it was a job that had never crossed my mind and that seemed to me to be the best option.” to be able to work as an artist on a daily basis.
But where Carmen sees opportunity, Sara sees the precariousness of being a waitress: “A waiter on a cruise ship works between 13 and 15 hours a day, with no days off. Even if there is a stopover in port, you continue to work. For me the working conditions are regrettable.”
