this is your average income

The distribution of income in Spain is unequal, not only between communities or provinces, but also between municipalities and neighborhoods. According to the latest available data published by the Tax Agency and the INE, Pozuelo de Alarcón has been placed at this level again. The richest city in Madrid of the country both by average gross income and by average income per person.

The three Spanish municipalities with the highest average annual income per capita were Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid), Matadepera (Barcelona) and Boadilla del Monte (Madrid). At the other extreme, those with the lowest average annual income per capita are Huesa (Jaén), Iznalloz (Granada) and El Palmar de Troya (Seville).

The richest municipality in Extremadura is in Cáceres

But what about the rest of the Spanish municipalities? In the case of Extremadura the richest municipality is located in the province of Cáceres. East Almaraz.

The data to answer this question comes from two sources. On the one hand, from the Tax Agency, which published at the beginning of October the statistics of income tax filers by municipalities with more than 1,000 inhabitants and positions the different municipalities according to their average gross income. The data – the latest available – corresponds to 2022.

On the other hand, the INE has also published the Household Income Distribution Atlas with data also from 2022 which allows us to see the average annual income per capita in municipalities with more than 2,000 inhabitants.

In both indicators, Almaraz appears to be the richest municipality. Their average gross income in 2022 according to Treasury data was 28,603 per year. Of course, that’s without counting the city of Cáceres. If he had it, Almaraz would still be in second place and above Badajoz.

Taking into account the average annual income per capita of municipalities with 2,000 inhabitants, The INE estimates it at 15,492 euros. Here again, the cities of Cáceres and Badajoz are not taken into account.

With tax data (average annual gross income), this municipality is followed by Navalmoral de la Mata (27,608 euros), Zafra (27,109), Mérida (26,274), Plasencia (25,666), Don Benito (24,185 ) and Malpartida de Cáceres (23,920).

  • Almaraz: 28,603 euros per year of average gross income

  • Navalmoral de la Mata: 27,608 euros per year of average gross income

  • Zafra: 27,109 euros per year of average gross income

  • Plasencia: 25,666 euros per year of average gross income

  • Don Benito: 24,185 euros per year of average gross income

  • Malpartida de Cáceres: 23,920 euros per year average gross income

To put the data in context, in the richest municipality in Spain, that is, the one with the highest average gross income (Pozuelo de Alarcón), the figure reaches 85,323 euros. In the poorest city, Huesa (Jaén), the average gross annual income is 13,658 euros.
