Former Madrid mayor Manuela Carmena released a statement this morning on her Instagram account regarding the case of former Sumar spokesperson Íñigo Errejón, who was accused of sexual harassment and assault. “It seems horrible to me. I could never think or hear anything related to this behavior. It hurts me deeply because of what the victims of this behavior are experiencing and it hurts me that a person who was a left-wing ideological reference could have this attitude,” the judge wrote.
Carmena was one of the founders of Más Madrid in 2018, a space she shared with Errejón, and she gave her opinion on the case a day after Rita Maestre, of the same party and ex-companion of the politician . In the brief text from the former Madrid advisor, she admits having received the news as a “great shock”. “Then I thought I should think about what happened,” Carmena continues.
Since last week and after Errejón’s resignation, testimonies from women accusing the former spokesperson for Yolanda Díaz’s party have multiplied. Although at present the only complaint against Errejón is that of actress Elisa Mouliaá, other people have spoken out publicly anonymously and reported other sexist or humiliating behavior.
“I dare to suggest that we need to know politicians, not only their political and intellectual lucidity, but also their emotional intelligence. That is, we need to know their emotional intelligence, their sensitivity and the way they care and love,” concludes Carmena in her statement.
