Thousands gather in Madrid to demand general elections

Thousands of people, 25,000 according to the government delegation, gathered this Sunday in Madrid’s Plaza Castilla to protest against the government of Pedro Sánchez and demand general elections.

The gathering organized by the Platform for Constitutional Spain, made up of around a hundred civic associations, was attended by dozens of political leaders from parties such as the Popular Party and Vox. Shouting “Sánchez resigns” or “It’s not a party, it’s a mafia” and waving flags of Spain, as well as the European Union or the Burgundy Cross, thousands of people gathered under the slogan “For unity, dignity, law”. and freedom. General Elections Now! »

The general secretary of the PP of Madrid, Alfonso Serrano, was present on behalf of the popular parties; the deputy secretary and deputy of the PP of Madrid in the Congress of Deputies, Noelia Núñez; the spokesperson of the Senate, Alicia García, and the deputy secretary for Organization of the PP, Carmen Fúnez, who justified the absence of the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, from the gathering by “personal reasons”.

In statements to the press, Funez denounced that “there has not been a moment of democracy as delicate” as the current one and assured that citizens were “tired” of “lies”, of “lack of cleanliness” and “corruption” of the Sánchez government. According to him, the accusation of the State Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz, whom he designated as “Minister 23”, represents “a before and an after”, which is why he once again requested his resignation and that it does not serve the “strategy of entrenchment of Pedro Sánchez at the Moncloa Palace”.

For his part, the president of Vox, Santiago Abascal, who also participated in the call, demanded the “complete” resignation of the government and confided that the PP would propose to “modify” its agreements with the PSOE and renounce any “collaboration” with Pedro Sánchez. “This government must go home and give voice to the Spanish people,” Abascal said. Despite this, Abascal warned that “it will be very difficult for him to fall”, because, according to him, Sánchez “needs power at all costs” and “is ready to use any tool at his disposal”.

During the event, one of the speakers who spoke was the former prosecutor of the National Court, Ignacio Gordillo, who assured that it was “a very sad day” for those who applied justice “to murderous terrorists”, but above all, “for the victims of terrorism”, in reference to the recently approved law which benefits ETA prisoners. For his part, former deputy Marcos de Quinto expressed his desire “to stop this coup d’état from within our own institutions that Pedro Sánchez and his gang are perpetuating.”

The demonstration was also attended by the general secretary of the PP of Madrid, Alfonso Serrano, for whom the current situation of the government is “absolutely unsustainable”, lacking “direction” and devoting itself exclusively to “attacking” any type of “dissidence”. But he warned Sánchez that, no matter his attacks against Madrid’s president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, “nothing will be able to hide all the corruption that bogs down the PSOE, the government and the president of the government.”
