Thousands of people take to the streets of Andalusia “for decent housing”

Thousands of people mobilized this Saturday in the Andalusian capitals of Malaga, Cádiz and Sevilleas well as in the municipalities of Cádiz of Costs and the Design line to claim the right to decent housing. Likewise, they criticized the model of “tourist exploitation” that exists in these cities and which, according to the demonstrators, leads a large part of the population to leave their place of origin.

The organizing groups brought together a large number of people who, in a climate of protest, traveled through these Andalusian cities, highlighting the problem that access to housing represents for the general population. They highlight the high purchase or rental prices, which cause a “displacement effect” of the population.

During these demonstrations, it was possible to read banners and hear protest slogans referring to the right to housing, against “expulsion” of the city’s inhabitantsand against the establishment of a city model which, according to him, is “not sustainable”. According to the respective organizing platforms, in the capital Malaga around 30,000 people would have been mobilized, while in Seville there would have been around 35,000 and in Cádiz around 4,000.

Thus, in Malaga, the Málaga Para Vivir (MPV) platform criticized the fact that the urban model of the capital of the Costa del Sol “evicts residents, transforms housing into businesses and erodes the social fabric”. The demonstration in this city counted 10,000 participantsaccording to the Government Subdelegation, which clarified that there was no incident. A third of the figure proposed by the organization.

The city is not a business“This is a place to live,” is the cry that echoes in the streets of Seville, where the organization Sevilla Para Vivir (SPV) has gathered around 35,000 people, according to its own estimates.

From the SPV they described the mobilization as a “success” and highlighted their request to the various public administrations to “adopt measures to guarantee the right to housing”. Furthermore, they stated that The central government “launches conciliation measures” which involve “protecting the speculation capacity of owners and renters”, in reference to the youth obligation, which “will ultimately be a mechanism for transferring public money to private pockets reaching 200 million euros”.

Social housing

Likewise, Cádiz Resiste took to the streets around 4,000 people, according to its estimates, who came out of the Plaza de San Antonio chanting slogans such as “Either we change the system or we will find ourselves without housing”, Or “Social housing, without leaving anyone behind”.

The organization opposed “real estate speculation” which, it said, “leave neighborhoods full of tourists”; and they also spoke out “against the big chains which drive out our small businesses”, and “against the salaries which do not allow us to pay rents which are crazy”.

On the other hand, in Tarifa, the citizen platform “Tarifa no se vende” took to the streets and declared that “the difficulties and obstacles to accessing housing in decent conditions are not new“. Furthermore, he added that “land and houses that are not used for living are mainly used for urban and real estate speculation.”

Finally, on the Línea de la Concepción, the Flavi platform regretted that “the border effect drives up rents”and that the social housing stock “is abandoned by the Council”.
