Thousands of protesters demand Macron’s ouster in new day of demonstrations in France

The dismissal of President Emmanuel Macron was the main demand of the demonstration organized this Saturday in Paris after the call of left-wing organizations and parties to protest against the formation of the new government, expected in the next few hours or tomorrow.

“Macron, impeachment” was the most visible slogan on the banners and in the slogans chanted by the thousands of demonstrators who marched between Place de la Bastille and Place de la Nation, organized by student and feminist associations.

Some of the left’s demands could also be observed in the campaign for the early legislative elections of June 30 and July 7, such as the increase in the minimum wage to 1,600 euros net per month (today it is 1,400) or the repeal of the pension reform and lowering the retirement age to 60.

From a floating truck equipped with a sound system to warm up the atmosphere, the presenters insisted on the messages against Macron and against the new Executive that the Prime Minister, the conservative Michel Barnier, should soon know.

In particular against two names of potential ministers of Los Republicanos (LR, the conventional right-wing party), known to be two far-right personalities.

These are Senator Bruno Retailleau, who according to press leaks could be the new head of the Interior, and who advocates a drastic reduction in legal and illegal immigration; and Laurence Garnier, opposed to same-sex marriage, and who was in charge of the Family portfolio.

Among the political parties, the most visible of the march was La Francia Insumisa (LFI), with the presence, among other leaders, of the president of the group in the National Assembly, Mathilde Panot, while its leader, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, for his part, was in Marseille.

The obvious absence was that of the Socialist Party (PS), which, although it maintains a common position against the formation of the new government that Macron has designed with the coalition of the New Popular Front (NFP), does not share certain forms of protest of LFI.

In total, around fifty rallies were organised this Saturday against the nomination of Barnier and for the formation of a right-wing government.

The impeachment procedure against Macron was launched by LFI and it passed the first filter at the table of the National Assembly this Tuesday this week, thanks among others to the PS, but it has no sign of being able to prosper.

Firstly, because the socialists themselves have already warned that they will not vote for it because they consider it to be an instrument intended for cases of high treason which do not correspond to the current situation.

But above all because to move forward, he would have to win the support of two thirds of parliamentarians, which would require the support of Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN), which has already announced that it would not lend itself to “a distraction maneuver” by the “extreme left.”

LFI justifies it as “a political response” to the fact that Macron did not choose the left-wing candidate for the post of Prime Minister, Lucie Castets, and opted for the conservative Michel Barnier.
